The Southcare Trust was wound up after the aeromedical rescue contract they previously ran in partnership with Snowy Hydro was taken over by Toll Group.

Interim chief executive Carol Bennett handed over their final fundraising cheque to the ACT government on Wednesday as a commemorative plaque was unveiled.

Ms Bennett said they had passed a "wonderful legacy" on to government.

"The Southcare Trust helped thousands of Canberrans and people in the surrounding regions, it was a fantastic service and it was funded by people in Canberra who really had great passion for ensuring that we could save people's lives in this region," Ms Bennett said.

"I'd have to say it would have to be up there with the best, most passionate areas of support for the Canberra community. People loved to support the Southcare chopper and we've had an amazing level of support through donations and volunteering, people did really recognise the sight and sound of the chopper in the ACT and they will the new one too."

Emergency Services Minister Mick Gentleman said the millions the Southcare Trust raised through galas showed how much Canberrans looked after one another.

He said the new Toll helicopter had already helped 120 people.

'Now we're moving onto the new service with the Toll helicopter. It has more technology than the previous aeromedical rescue service. It gets there faster, the engines are bigger and it allows us to deal more with those emergencies across the ACT and into NSW," Mr Gentleman said,

Toll took over from Canadian Helicopter Company in April after winning a 10-year contract with the ACT and NSW governments for the emergency helicopter service in the entire southern region of NSW, including the ACT.

The ACT government will spend $1.4 million per year on the service, although the NSW government will foot 90 per cent of the cost.
