The messages of support came as the new chief minister revealed he received requests to run for the Senate position to be vacated by Kate Lundy before Katy Gallagher announced her intention to stand.

"I was somewhat reluctant because there was things I still wanted to do locally," Mr Barr said.

Alan Player married his long-time partner, Joel, minutes after midnight on December 7 last year and said Mr Barr's elevation had been a sweet end to the anniversary week.

"It's breaking down barriers and it's going to put pressure on Tony Abbott to honour his pre-election commitment that if a same-sex marriage bill comes before the Parliament it will be a conscience vote."

Mr Barr said he would continue to be a passionate voice for reform on the issue, and would address it with Mr Abbott at a future meeting, but it would "not be the No. 1 thing" raised.

"There are a number of other issues that need to be resolved for the [ACT] community," he said.

Emily Jehne and Ellie Siller, of Yarralumla, married on December 8 last year and said Mr Barr's new role felt like further momentum in the campaign for a change to marriage laws.

"I think it's fantastic that Andrew Barr has become leader," she said.

"I've watched the US states fall like dominoes, and I'd be really disappointed if we became one of the last [Western] countries to make this change."

While the Senate has defeated numerous same-sex marriage bills in the last five years, Mr Barr said a change was inevitable.

"The issue will not go away until full equality is granted," he said.

The Players and a number of the other 31 couples married last year will receive custom-made cards on Sunday containing collated Twitter messages from the #5DaysofEquality hashtag.
