New ACT Government regulations will come into effect on Saturday to allow segway riders on footpaths and some Canberra roads.
But acting road safety minister Gordon Ramsay said segway users will have to wear an approved bicycle helmet, have a bell or other warning device fitted and use lights and reflects at night or in fog.
"It doesn't matter whether you're driving a car, walking or riding a bicycle, motorcycle or segway - we all need to act responsibly, be courteous to each other and share the road," he said.
The vehicles will be allowed on footpaths, 'shared paths' and nature strips, but riders must keep to the left on paths and roads - and on-road use is only allowed where there is no footpath.
Motorists will have to give way to segway riders when they travel on the road, or use pedestrian crossings, where segway riders must slow to 10kmh and be prepared to stop, as per the rules for cyclists.
