For inquisitive kids
Presented by Boeing and developed in collaboration with NASA and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Questacon's Above and Beyond is the ultimate interactive and multisensory flight exhibition that will invite visitors to experience what it takes to make the "impossible" possible - in and above the sky.
It's been a great success around the world and now lands in Canberra just in time for the holidays. The kids can design and test a supersonic jet in virtual high speed, plan a trip to Mars in an augmented reality experience, explore the aerodynamics of a flight by performing a wind tunnel test and experience a space elevator of the future. It's at Questacon in Parkes until July 23.
For sporty kids
Never too early to start thinking about the cricket season. Even if the footy season hasn't started. Sign the kids up for Camp Thunder, a two-day cricket camp hosted by the Sydney Thunder.
No need to worry if your son or daughter is not Shane Watson or Alex Blackwell, it's an inclusive games-based program aimed at kids aged 8-10 years and cricket experience is not necessary. Fun, however, is guaranteed. Fun and plenty of lime green. For $99 the kids get a t-shirt, drink bottle and wristband and a expertise coaching. It's all about the kit.
For Easter kids
Who thought it was a good idea to put Easter in the middle of the school holidays (and whack Anzac Day on the end of it)? All those extra days off gone. Why not embrace it and head to the National Library of Australia on April 20 to watch Hop?
It's our favourite Easter film with a rock and roll twist. Sassy rabbit EB, voiced by Russell Brand, isn't too keen to become the Easter Bunny, he wants to become a rock star. Throw in some chickens, a cool soundtrack and more candy than you can poop and you've got a perfect rainy day option. It's showing at 1pm and bookings are essential.
For artistic kids
Political cartoonists play an important role in our democracy. They speak out about issues they care about in pictures. The Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House is hosting school holiday workshops where kids can develop the drawing skills of a professional in a fun, hands-on class with cartoonist Andrew Hore.
There's a class every day, from 10-11.30am, April 10-14, at $8 per child (including museum entry). It's suitable for ages 5 and up with an accompanying adult. Bookings, again, are essential: moadoph.gov.au/school-holidays
For hungry kids
Kids Pantry has set the standard for cooking classes in Canberra for more than six years now. This year, there's a varied school holiday program (and menu) suitable for all ages, 5-18. You can book a single session or a full day option with classes running every day of the holidays, except over Easter.
We like the look of Thursday April 13 with Easter Egg Cupcakes, Crumbed Fish Burgers and Hot Cross Buns. Use your school holidays wisely and the kids might well be able to put dinner on the table come Term 2. Bookings are essential and costs vary from $45 for a morning session to $145 for the whole day.
And one for parents
Remember when you had the energy to get worked up about things and Billy Bragg was your champion? For more than 30 years, the English artist has represented the common man, laying down a soundtrack to our troubled lives. We still can't quite believe he's coming to Canberra.
For one night only, April 20, he'll be performing at The Playhouse, with Grammy Award winning songwriter Joe Henry. Bringing out songs from their brand new album Shine a Light: Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad, as well as beloved tracks from their individual catalogues, Billy Bragg and Joe Henry represents an experience not to be missed. Get a babysitter.
