Territory and Municipal Services Minister Shane Rattenbury said the ACT government planned to cut the speed limit to 40km/h at the group centres. It follows cuts to the speed limits in Woden, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong, Belconnen and Civic.

He said Canberrans could provide feedback on the proposed change, which would be rolled out progressively.

The precincts included in the proposal are Amaroo, Calwell, Charnwood, Chisholm, Conder, Curtin, Dickson, Erindale, Hawker, Jamison, Kaleen, Kingston, Kambah, Kippax, Manuka, Mawson, Wanniassa and Weston.

Mr Rattenbury said the slower speed limits in Canberra's town centres had been successful.

"The slower speed environments improve safety for all road users and, in particular, help make travel in town centres safer and more comfortable" Mr Rattenbury said in a statement.

"Slower speed environments improve safety for all road users and help draw more pedestrian activity to the area. They help to create safer and vibrant community areas across Canberra."

Mr Rattenbury said the 40km/h speed limit precincts for the 18 group centres would be finalised following community input.

"As with the introduction of previous precincts, after six months we will conduct an evaluation to determine their effectiveness in improving safety for vulnerable road users. This will again include feedback from the community as well as traffic surveys," Mr Rattenbury concluded.
