Smoke is expected to cover Canberra as parks fire managers and fire-fighters conduct controlled burns across the ACT on Thursday in a bid to reduce bushfire risk.

The ACT Parks and Conservation Service says the burns will benefit habitat at grasslands and destroy fire fuel.
Burns will include 12.59 hectares at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, 399 hectares near Wombat fire trail off Brindabella Road in Lower Cotter Catchment, 12.1 hectares at Gungaderra grassland nature reserve and 10 hectares at Mulanggari grassland nature reserve.
People with asthma, other chronic respiratory and chronic cardiac diseases should not perform vigorous exercise and should stay inside if affected by the smoke, the ACT Parks and Conservation Service said.
"People with asthma in particular should continue their medication and consult their general practitioner if they have any difficulties," it said in a statement.
Staff will continue to monitor the burn sites until smoke has not been visible for 24 hours.
