Bureau of Meteorology data shows the temperature dropped to minus 6.2 degrees at Canberra Airport at 5am on Thursday.
It was the coldest August temperature recorded at that Bureau of Meteorology weather station since August 5, 2014, when it reached minus 7.6 degrees.
It was also the fifth coldest temperature recorded at Canberra Airport this winter.
Perisher, which registered the coldest temperature in Australia for eight years when it hit minus 14.2 degrees on Wednesday, warmed up for a low of minus 7.8 degrees on Thursday.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Ashleigh Langey said Canberra was under the influence of a high-pressure system, clear skies and dry air.
"All three allow the temperature to drop this low," she said.
Ms Langey said the high-pressure system was expected to move to the Tasman Sea on Thursday, with a trough approaching from the west set to bring a top temperature of 16 degrees.
The bureau is forecasting lows of 3 degrees on Friday, 5 degrees on Saturday and 0 degrees on Sunday, before minimum temperatures again fall below freezing point.
There is a 90 per cent chance of showers in Canberra on Friday, with 5-15 millimetres of rain expected.
