A trip to the Fyshwick Markets is now way more than a quick dash to pick up some cheese or apples with the opening of the Niche Markets. On the left hand side as you drive in there’s a collection of 40 or so stores which are filling week by week.

From children’s clothes to homewares, a barber shop, a florist, the most delicious donuts you’ll find in town (and we’ll come back to tell you the story of Krofne soon) and a stall run by a former chef from Chairman and Yip which will sell an array of Japanese cuisine, you might actually forget you came to the markets to do your shopping.
Better start the morning then with a strong coffee from Piccolo Market Coffee. Marco and Rachel Caputo have had their eye on the space for a while now. When Marco returned from coaching rugby in Japan they decided the time was right to get back into the game.
The pair ran Deli Marco at the Dickson shops 16 years ago, and then Piccolo Espresso to Go at the University of Canberra, in between stints travelling overseas with Marco’s rugby career. Rachel says she keeps track of it all by how old their children were at the time. Now the oldest two, Sophia and Joseph, are old enough to help make the coffees during university and school holidays.
They’re cupping their own Piccolo Market blend, a full-bodied, old school Italian style coffee with a strong finish and dark chocolate and caramel notes, and single origin choices roasted by Lonsdale Street Roasters. Teas, hot chocolates, and chai and turmeric lattes are also available.
There’s also a small selection of sweet treats from Sam Walker at Amore Cakes and Georgia Houston at GH Nutrition.
