Strong advocacy for Bali pair has strayed into dangerous territory

It is unclear if the delay in the transfer of convicted drug smugglers Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan from Bali to Nusa Kambangan island – where they are due to be executed by firing squad this month – is an administrative matter of no consequence or a glimmer of hope for a longer-term reprieve. A dramatic change of heart by Joko Widodo seems improbable. Despite pleas from the Australian federal government and a wide range of serving and retired politicians, the Indonesian President has twice refused requests for clemency.
