As they peel down the missing person posters dotted throughout Canberra and prepare to say their final farewells, Rezina, Vanessa and Adam Kahsai continue their push for an inquiry or inquest into the response to their father's disappearance.
The siblings said they felt validated after a meeting with ACT Policing on Tuesday about their concerns on the way in which their father's case was handled.
But they still believe the only way they'll learn what truly happened to him is through an official inquiry or inquest.
Mr Kahsai's body was recovered from bushland three months after he walked out of Calvary Hospital where he was being treated for alcohol withdrawal.
No date of death is recorded in his funeral notice because it is yet undetermined how long he lay there, just three kilometres away from where CCTV captured his last movements.
Vanessa Kahsai, who is a nurse in Dallas,Texas, said she fails to grasp just how this could have happened.
"The way his health care was handled was very surprising to me and very concerning," she said.
"It was made very plain he was a danger to himself and I think at that point it's important the health system recognises that and does what they need to do to keep him safe. Choosing to let him go because he was a voluntary patient was not choosing to care for him in the best way possible."
She said her family will urge the hospital to review how they manage patients like her father but also how they communicate with police.
"They sent an email which is a terrible form of communication. There was no guarantee they received that email and that was made obvious by the fact it bounced back. It took 26 hours before they realised that [it had bounced] and my father was in such questionable health that [that] amount of time was very dangerous for him. That has to change, that just can't happen again," she said.
An inquiry will hinge on the outcome of the coroner's report into Mr Kahsai's death.
Calvary Hospital, ACT Policing and health minister Simon Corbell previously expressed sympathy for the Kahsai family, but were unable to comment until the report is released.
Rezina Kahsai said while her father could now be buried, she didn't want him to be forgotten.
"It's important to us something happens, that changes results from this. To stand back and do nothing and let someone else go through this pain is not right," she said.
"For us it's about procedures and systems and restoring faith for the community that they can trust in these procedures for future experiences.
"It's hard to remain calm when grief and anger and despair are whirling around at one time. It's hard to remain focused but one step at a time."
