The ACT government will examine how teachers and students view gender as part of its quest to make Canberra the nation's most equitable jurisdiction.

It has also commissioned the Australian National University to identify the underlying causes of psychological distress in young Canberra women, according to the first report against the Women's Plan 2016-26.
The plan will require all directorates to determine the effect programs and policies may have on women, men, girls, boys and transgender people in the ACT, and whether or not different groups will be advantaged or disadvantaged by them.
And the government will next year review the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design General Code from the Territory Plan with a focus on making the ACT safe for women and girls.
Already the ACT's pre-development consultation guidelines have been updated to specify that developers are required to consult with "a diverse cross-section of the community", including women and young people, before submitting their development application.
The Women's Plan report revealed the government had started or completed most of the 44 actions commissioned in the strategy's first year.
In schools, the Community Services and Education directorates have been instructed to review existing research on how views of gender impact female students' wellbeing.
A gender equity and education advisory group was established in 2017 and had met in 2018, the report said.
"The findings will be used to develop and/or adapt policies, practices, training and resources to promote gender equity in schools," it said.
The report said the government had also investigated how to ensure companies contracted to undertake the territory's work were committed to gender equity.
Potential actions identified included broadening the definition of an ethical supplier to include that they must meet certain gender equity and domestic violence support standards.
YWCA Canberra recently called on the ACT government to reconsider awarding tenders to companies with a history of substantiated sexual harassment claims and breaches of discrimination law, and wrap requirements of the Workplace Gender Equality Act into procurement guidelines.
Women's Minister Yvette Berry this week lashed out at developer Geocon for using an "unnecessarily sexualised woman" on an invitation for the launch of the High Society apartment towers.
She spoke after the Canberra Liberals accused the government of treating women's safety as a low priority because the budget set a target of 38 per cent of women feeling safe by themselves in public at night.
About one-quarter of the 56 remaining actions in the Women's Plan were under way, according to the project update.
The ACT Office for Women received $696,000 over four years in last month's budget to implement key actions in the Women's Plan.
