Southern Cross newsreader Jared Coote, who looks after the evening bulletins, has attracted a legion of followers, with a Facebook page now set up in his honour.

Huge fans Bec Donnan and Britt Roderick said they started the page, "Jared Coote's Biggest Fans", a few months ago as a bit of a joke.

"We didn't think anyone would like it, we thought we'd get six likes from our friends. And then next thing we know there's almost 3000," said Donnan,

"People have gotten so into it. It's turned into something we never expected. "

Donnan said the duo, both ANU students, first came across Coote when he was doing the news bulletins during MasterChef. His popularity seems to have then skyrocketed during The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.

"We love him. He just talks and he's kind of cute. I don't know how to explain it, there's just something about him."

"People sometimes message us saying 'so glad we found other Jared Coote fans, this is amazing'."

The Facebook page's wall is now full of Jared Coote memes submitted by fans and a lot of photos snapped of him flashing his toothy grin on the evening news.

A couple of weeks ago Roderick and Donnan sealed their status as the newsreader's biggest fans, making themselves "Mrs Jared Coote" and "I love Jared Coote" T-shirts, which they then posted on the Facebook wall – only to find other fans putting in orders.

"We also were not expecting so much response for them – we just felt like making them and we thought we may as well see if anyone else wants one. I think we have like 30 people wanting them which was pretty impressive."

And they're not the only ones making Coote-related paraphernalia.

Jessica Driscoll and her friends first discovered Jared Coote when they were watching The Bachelorette.

"He was just the highlight of the ad breaks really – he's just very engaging," she said.

When it came time for the final episode, Driscoll and her friends decided to celebrate their favourite newsreader in vanilla cupcake form.

"We thought we would embrace Jared Coote and make the Coote cakes," she said.

Donnan and Roderick said they were yet to hear anything from Jared: "I tweeted at him once but he didn't respond," says Donnan.

Private Capital also had little luck getting a comment from Coote himself. Southern Cross Austereo was a little more willing to comment on the matter – only just. They sent us the following statement: "Jared is a great newsreader and it's no surprise to us he has a loyal fan base."
