As we say goodbye to 2017 and welcome in 2018, a raft of changes are set to come into effect once the fireworks have subsided.
From how Canberrans take out the rubbish and access information here are some of the changes to come in the ACT from January 1.
Green Bins
Tuggeranong residents who signed up to receive green bins for garden waste will receive their bins from the beginning of January.
While the first bin collection won't be until January 22, residents who have signed up to the service from late November should be receiving their bins in the first few days of the new year.
The expansion of the green bin service into Tuggeranong, after a successful trial in Kambah and Weston Creek, will be part of a territory-wide roll out.
From January, green bins will be rolled out to Banks, Bonython, Calwell, Chisholm, Conder, Fadden, Gilmore, Gordon, Gowrie, Greenway, Isabella Plains, Macarthur, Monash, Oxley, Richardson, Theodore, Wanniassa and Tharwa.
FOI laws
After many delays and setbacks, the ACT government's freedom of information legislation is set to come into effect from january.
As part of the legislation, government departments will be required to publish incoming-minister briefs and question-time briefs, as well as estimates and annual reports three years after they've been written.
Cabinet information will still be kept secret, as well as personal and legal information.
The legislation is set to take the ACT "from being one of the least open FOI jurisdictions in the country to one of the best", according to Greens leader Shane Rattenbury.
The bill was passed in August 2016 and was set to come into effect in July 2017 but was pushed back to the start of 2018 after an amendment from Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay.
In The City funding
Responsibility for promoting and improving urban areas around Civic and Braddon will be transferred from non-profit government organisation In The City Canberra to the City Renewal Authority.
Name change
ActewAGL will be no more as of January 1. Instead, its name will change to Evoenergy come New Year's Day.
The company will manage the electricity network throughout Canberra as well as Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Bungendore and Nowra.
The name change came after new naming guidelines from the Australian Energy Regulator in 2016, with the change aimed at avoiding confusion with ActewAGL's infrastructure and retail arms.
