ACT Policing said 20 padlocks had been stolen from four separate sports fields across Canberra's south on February 1 and 2.
A spokesman said officers didn't know what the thieves' motivation was and whether they stole the locks for monetary gain, nuisance, or if they were looking for something else.
The locks were removed from toilet and change room facilities provided by the ACT government for community groups to use the facilities.
The theft of the locks is a substantial cost to the ACT government: about $1800.
- Wanniassa Oval on Hyland Place, ACT - four locks stolen from toilet and change room doors.
- Kambah Oval on Chirnside Circuit, Kambah - seven locks stolen from toilet and change room doors.
- Rivett Oval on Bangalay Crescent, Rivett - three locks stolen from toilet and change room doors.
- Mawson Oval on Beasley St, Mawson - six locks stolen (five from toilet and change room doors and one from a nearby curators shed)
The padlocks have "PEA5.3" engraved on them near the locking mechanism.
A spokesperson for Transport Canberra and City Services said there had been minimal impact on the day to day running of the sportsgrounds other than the need to replace the stolen locks.
