As the sun sets on another typically balmy south coast afternoon, I pour myself a refreshing drink. Although I can hear the distant boom of the ocean, from my vantage spot on the top deck of one of Bermagui's more elegant homes, I can't see the waves. However, as my gaze is drawn beyond the magnificent stand of spotted gums at the bottom of the otherwise rambling English-style garden, I can just make out the oyster leases on the Bermagui River bathed in a pre-dusk glow. A light breeze, laced with the scent of frangipanis, rustles through the leafy ginkgo which shades the western side of the home – a natural air conditioner. Divine.
