Time is running out to enter The Canberra Times 2016 winter photo competition

But don't pack away the electric blankets and heaters just yet, with the ACT expecting a run of cool mornings over the next week.

Minimum temperatures are expected to hover between freezing and two degrees between Saturday and Wednesday and the mercury climbing to the mid to high teens over the next seven days.

There is no forecast of rain over the coming days until the next front moves in on Wednesday, bringing with it a 40 per cent of showers.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Emily McVeigh said Canberra would likely see an average end to winter.

"There's roughly only a 20 per cent chance of exceeding the medium and maximum temperatures for August and in terms of rainfall, there's a 70 per cent chance of exceeding the median rainfall for August," she said.

"We're tracking on average, maybe slightly above."

With winter drawing to a close, it is also means budding photographers have only three more weeks to enter The Canberra Times 2016 winter photo competition, which closes on August 31.

Iwan van Hagen submitted this stunning photo of sunrise in Coombs earlier this month as part of his entry.

Mr van Hagen was on a morning walk but did not have time to go home and get his camera so he took the photo on his iPhone.

He only recently moved to Coombs and hopes he will have more time to enjoy his new photography hobby.

Photographers are invited to send in their best winter photos for the chance to win $1000 of prizes and have their work published.
