Timed parking waived around Manuka Oval on AFL game days

Instead, the ACT government has waived timed parking in streets around the oval on AFL game nights and other major sporting events until August.

In changes declared by planning minister Mick Gentleman last Thursday, drivers can stay in time limited parking zones indefinitely on streets bound by Brisbane Avenue, Wentworth Avenue, Canberra Avenue, Flinders Way and Hobart Avenue between 11am and midnight on game days.

However, a spokesman for Mr Gentleman said it was a "routine matter where existing parking controls are temporarily suspended to assist with managing traffic and spectator demand associated with all major sporting fixtures".

"This particular temporary suspension allows attendees to the AFL matches to park for longer times than indicated on street signs," he said.

"The declaration is only in force for the day of the matches, commencing at 11am and concluding at midnight. This isn't specific to the AFL either, any large sporting event at Manuka has the same arrangement."

Indeed the ACT government did the same thing last year, and for other events too, including the National Multicultural Festival

Parking during sporting matches at Manuka Oval has long been a sore point among sports fans.

In February 2013, more than $17,000 in parking fines were handed out in the area around the oval during Australia's sell-out day-night cricket match against the West Indies.

That same year, the government began suspending timed parking around the precinct.
