"Yesterday morning, when Mr Elliott, the police magistrate, drove out of the yard of Pooley's Hotel, en route for Braidwood, one of the front wheels of his buggy suddenly fell off.

"Upon investigation it was discovered that nut had been removed from the axle.

"In spite of a diligent search being made for the missing part, it could not be found.

"It was at once suspected that some contemptible scoundrel, who had no more suitable way to exercise his leisure time, perpetrated the dastardly act in order to await the consequences.

"Mr Elliott drives a rather flighty horse and he was very fortunate to have brought him to a standstill after travelling about 100 feet without the wheel, otherwise the result might have been very fatal, indeed.

"A blacksmith was called, the missing part replaced, and the journey resumed.

"Mr Elliott informed a representative of the press, who was present, that he would give £10 for information leading to the name of the culprit being made known."

"The object of good templary is to promote total abstinence.

"It is an old saying that it is difficult to break anyone off a bad habit all at once, and that it should be done gradually.

"It appears it is the latter idea that a league known as the Anti-Shouting League is basing their problems upon.

"A branch of this league has been founded at Ballarat, Victoria, and a telegram to a Sydney daily during the week states that the campaign is progressing rapidly.

"The league does not put any restraint on a man purchasing his own drink when he thinks he requires it but forbids him to pay for a drink for another person, or to accept a drink from anyone.

"Rule two of the Anti-Shouting League sets out that the principle of the league is not intended to promote total abstinence, but has full sympathy with every effort to promote temperance.

"We have heard of similar leagues doing good work in America."
