Canberra auto mechanic apprentice Kris Davis was slowly restoring his much-loved 1982 Ford WB One Tonne Ute last year when life got in the way.

Working on the project with the help of his dad Craig, his older brother Jonathan and a group of mates, the 20-year-old was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in February 2016, a cancer affecting his blood and bone marrow.
With more important things to focus on, he was forced to put the project aside to get well.
He thought the restoration would have to wait.
The Canberra community and the Starlight Foundation had other ideas.
On Tuesday, more than 100 family, friends and supporters gathered at Canberra's Exhibition Park to see the fully restored car unveiled, coming as Mr Davis celebrates being in remission and in good health.
The car, completed with upgraded motor, gearbox, wiring, restored upholstery, a new timber tray and merlot paint job, is set to stand out on the capital's roads.
"It's gorgeous," he said. "I couldn't believe it when they took the cover off.
"I saw it last 12 months ago and it's so different now. It's basically unrecognisable. A lot more people contributed than I ever expected.
"It's amazing how many people got behind the charity. There's a few of these Fords around, but probably not many in the condition and appearance like that."
The Starlight Foundation said it had been inundated with offers from Canberra tradies, mechanics and suppliers offering to help with the project. The restoration involved hundreds of hours or work, thousands of dollars and a range of in-kind donations.
Mr Davis' employer, the Elvin Group, were key supporters of the restoration and plans are forming for the car to be used to support local charities, including to raise awareness of Leukemia.
He thanked everyone involved in the project, the Starlight Foundation and its supporters and the medical staff at Canberra Hospital.
"I was diagnosed in February, in remission in March and then had a transplant in November," he said.
"I received so much excellent care. Now it's just regular check ups and blood tests and trying to keep well."
After Tuesday's festivities were over, Mr Davis' grandmother was among those lining up for the first ride in the restored car but his girlfriend, Emma, beat them, riding shotgun with Kris around Exhibition Park as part of a live TV broadcast.
"It's so exciting and a lot to take in," he said.
