The Proximity Canberra Triathlon, centred around Rond Terrace, took on a run-ride-run "dryathlon" format after Lake Burley Griffin was closed to swimmers because of blue-green algae.
Edward Vining won the male standard solo event in a time of one hour, 50 minutes and 40 seconds, ahead of John Ketelbey and Glen Sturesteps.
Tracy Clinch was the fastest woman, finishing in two hours, one minute and 54 seconds to beat Monique de Abreu and Alexandra Keith.
Saturday morning's events were open to competitors aged 12 and over.
Triathlon ACT executive director Craig Johns said with 1617 schoolchildren registered to swim, cycle and run around the Australian Institute of Sport on Sunday, it had been more than 20 years since triathlon had reached such lofty heights in Canberra.
