Justice Minister Shane Rattenbury announced the trial of lane filtering on Friday, following a recommendation from the Legislative Assembly's inquiry into vulnerable road users that a trial be established before March this year.

The practice of lane filtering is when motorcyclists move between cars and other vehicles which are stopped or slow moving. It allows motorcyclists to move away from other traffic faster, including from red lights.

Mr Rattenbury said the trial from February 1 would bring the ACT into line with New South Wales road rules.

The plan has already won support from the NRMA policy specialist Ron Collins and Motorcycle Riders Association ACT branch president Jen Woods and will include all ACT roads. ACT Policing helped develop the trial.

It will be an offence for motorcyclists to lane filter at speeds greater than 30 kilometres per hour, in school zones, in cycling or breakdown lanes or on kerbsides next to footpaths.

Only fully licensed motorcyclists will be allowed to lane filter, meaning learners and provisional license holders cannot filter.

The launch of the trial will coincide with an education campaign and a series of television and radio commercials, including during coverage of the Cricket World Cup.

Mr Rattenbury said some level of illegal motorcycle lane filtering already took place on Canberra's roads.

"There will be a constant review of how [the trial] is going and that will be between police, Roads ACT, the Motorcycle Riders Association and other key stakeholders.

"We will be monitoring as it goes along to make sure major problems are not emerging or perhaps tweaks need to be made. We believe this can be done safely, it will add to the convenience of motorcyclists and add to the safety of motorcyclists."

Mr Rattenbury said the provisions could be permanently added to the ACT road rules if the trial is successful.

"This simply is another thing for car drivers to take into account as they think about motorcyclists on the road," Mr Rattenbury said.

Ms Woods said the trial would be welcomed by motorcyclists.

"We've been very aware of what's been happening in New South Wales and are very supportive of what the ACT government is doing in this trial.

"Being able to move to the front of traffic is obviously visible but it also allows us to move away from the congested traffic behind us so that is very positive."

Ms Woods called on car drivers to be considerate and aware of motorcyclists as the trial got underway.

The NRMA also supported the NSW trial.

"As a faster moving vehicle motorcycles can take away from lights a lot quicker so it gives them a bit more space," Mr Colins said.

"It gives them a bit more space and a bit more safety. I think the majority of the population will see it as a courtesy thing and that's what we would like to reinforce."
