"The growth has been exponential, there was no way that anyone could have predicted how it has grown," he said.
"There's a lot of unknowns in the field, which is exciting."
Mr Gladwell is one of the leading artists when it comes to virtual reality and is in Canberra this weekend, featuring at the National Gallery of Australia.
His latest work, Orbital Vanitas, which places the users in a human skull orbiting the earth, is the only virtual reality display in the Hyper Real exhibition at the gallery.
He said while commercial VR projects had only been around for two or three years, lots of different ideas for the medium were being explored.
"Everyone is trying to find a way of pushing this medium forward because it's new and exciting, and people are excited by all the potential aspects of VR," Mr Gladwell said.
"It will get to a stage where VR won't be a big deal because it will be incorporated into different media and more and more platforms."
Canberra isn't the first place where Orbital Vanitas has been displayed, receiving its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January this year.
Since then, it has been shown at both the Cannes and Sydney film festivals.
Mr Gladwell said the reaction to the work had been overwhelming.
"I'm really thrilled that so many people have been able to see it," he said.
"I guess one of the fun things was you being able to see the earth from such a wide orbit, and there's something universally appealing about being able to see it all there."
As part of his work, Mr Gladwell is part of a group of artists focused on creating works in virtual reality called Badfaith Collective.
Working alongside fellow Australian artist Leo Faber, the pair also pool their talent with artists in both London and Los Angeles, helping to collaborate on several virtual reality projects.
Mr Gladwell said the group's approach can be self-described as "punk".
"We're a bit on the punk end of the spectrum because we throw things together quickly," he said.
"Pressure can be productive, and maybe that's needed where people need to develop projects."
The artist said while virtual reality was largely experimental now, it's set to become more commonplace in years to come.
"Right now it's very specific and experimental, but I do think it's going to diverge and it will become more specialised in different areas," he said.
