Walk, ride or run to help out Ronald McDonald House

"A social worker linked us in with Ronald McDonald House, and they were more than willing to open the doors and we got a room in there and we've been staying there for almost a month," said Todd.

Victoria is the second child for the couple, whose four-year-old son remained back home in Crookwell, and Todd said he can't imagine what they would have done without Ronald McDonald House.

"It's brilliant – the residence was $50 a night plus $20 for an extra person. We didn't have that much money when we came up here. And they set us up in a bedroom – it was like a really good hotel in a way," he said.

"There's a fridge for us to put all our personal things in plus a cupboard with a lock on it. And at least once a week a group comes in and they cook up a really nice dinner for everyone that's staying."

Todd said that while the reason for their stay wasn't necessarily positive, the environment at the house made the situation so much better.

"It's not our home but it was very comfortable. We met a few other families up here and we've all become great friends, and without Ronald McDonald House we wouldn't have known them and would really, really be struggling with our daughter," he said.

"We probably would have to be back in Goulburn or take out a large loan."

Victoria was transferred to Goulburn Hospital on Friday, and Todd said they're hoping to take her home on Monday or Tuesday.

To help out more families like Victoria's, next weekend the Ronald McDonald House Canberra is running their RMH Canberra Challenge.

On Saturday September 20, there is a walk and run with 5km and 10km routes available. Or if you're more cycling inclined, there is also a ride on both September 19 and 20.

The cycle gives participants the opportunity to ride the same route as the professionals in the National Road Series.

Riders go in the draw to win a mounted jersey from Australia's Orica Edge Cycling Team signed by Canberra's own Tour de France rider Michael Matthews, plus there are prizes for the highest fundraisers.

Registration is $150 per rider before September 17, or $175 on the day, which includes a cycling jersey, insurance and all refreshments.

If you lack in attention span, or if you're a lover of icecream, mark the Canberra Short Film Festival in your diary.

On at Dendy Canberra from September 19 to 21, the festival will see some of the best cinema from around the world, plus some local creations.

Each night will also have a special float with an endless supply of ice cream – celebrating a different flavour each night.

The festival kicks off on the Friday night with the top Canberra films, including local filmmaker Jimmy Ennett's film Sparks which is all in slow motion.

"The audio is the messages that someone has left on a voicemail, and the visual shows a really young relationship. They're smitten and you start to be clued that the young woman has been offered a scholarship in Germany," he said.

"The voicemail messages are all from the boyfriend, and they change in tone. So you can see them right up to the moment that she leaves at the airport."

Ennett, who runs his own media company and hopes to one day get into feature-length films, said he believes Canberra's local film scene is better than people give it credit for.

"A lot of people think it'll be really bad but it's actually quite a blessing in a way, I'm quite connected basically with the people doing everything in the city – if I was to start in Sydney to Melbourne you'd almost be swallowed up before you started," he said.

"What Screen ACT is doing is great. They've been putting a lot of initiatives in with filmmakers. A few years ago it just wasn't an option to make something here, and now I just don't think that's the case."

Also showing is Scott Holgate's film Heavy Lifting, starring Christopher Curran (pictured in a still from the film) from Kambah.

"It's about a young boy named Toby who becomes obsessed with body building after his father leaves the family," he said.

"It's a story about embracing the quirkiness of your personality and not caring what other people think and just being yourself – I think it's a film with a positive message."

The cinematographer from Tuggeranong's film was shot around the city, including Queanbeyan and Tuggeranong with local cast and crew.

Scott said he thought the short film festival was a "great start" for filmmakers.

"I think the best part about the festival is you enter your film hoping to receive some recognition for all the time and hard work making them, but it's also great to see them on the big screen."

It's been out with the old and in with the new in Braddon lately, as Lonsdale and Mort Streets continue to get a major makeover.

Vintage fashion store Designer Op Shop has recently moved down Lonsdale Street to a new location at number 18, but they're still all about everything old and pre-loved.

The family business started in 2011. Owners Taylor Pitsilos and her Mum Sharyn Pitsilos are big fans of buying pre-loved clothes and vintage pieces which they would then sell at local markets.

"Then we just had so much stuff, we sort of filled our garage full of clothes, and the markets were going really well so I decided to quit my job, and literally one day we went in and saw this space in Braddon," Taylor said.

"It was a temporary lease for three months, so we thought, 'hey let's see what we can do here,' and we just tucked ourselves in there, went for it, and haven't turned back since."

Fashion is something that well and truly runs in the family. Sharyn ran fashion boutique Chin Chin in Canberra city for 20 years, and Taylor went to Sydney to study at FBI Fashion College.

Taylor says she's always been a fan of vintage clothing.

"Vintage clothes have more of a story. You can tell they've been loved and been through things that we haven't, and you can wear them and appreciate them for what they are," she said.

"The way that they're made is not how clothes are made today – the quality of some beading and embroidery – you're not going to find that today. It's rare and it's special."

Taylor will show how to mix old with new when Designer Op Shop takes part in the second ever Local Fashion Trail at QT Canberra next week.

"I will be really focussing on vintage. I just got back from London last week so I've got 8-10 pieces of vintage that I've picked up straight from London that I'm bringing to the show," she said.

"And I always mix vintage with a bit of modern, like our accessories and shoes tend to be modern so they can be worked well."

The free event will also see local fashion businesses Braddon Tailors, Soho Dezigns and Wildwood take to the runway.
