But, despite a clear predilection for the political, Canberrans also weren't shy in getting into a Hollywood blockbuster or two, with Game of Thrones and The Martian among the top five most-borrowed DVDs at the ACT's libraries.
The top five most-borrowed books in 2016 were: The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo; Reckoning: A Memoir by Magda Szubanski; Spark Joy: A Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up by Marie Kondo; The Road to Ruin: How Tony Abbott and Peta Credlin Destroyed Their Own Government by Nikki Savva and The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood.
Transport and City Services Minister Meegan Fitzharris said The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up was also in the top 5 books in 2015.
"And it might be a sign of living in the nation's capital that a political biography has made it into the top 5 books six years in a row," she said.
Canberrans borrow about 2.85 million items from ACT public libraries each year, and some 1.96 million visitors came through the doors in 2015-16.
The top five DVDs borrowed in 2016 were: The Dressmaker; The Martian; Bridge of Spies; Spectre and Game of Thrones: the Complete Fifth Series.
Ms Fitzharris said various seasons of Game of Thrones had been in the top five DVDs each year since 2013.
