So today we say hello to Jemima Parker, a Canberra-based visual artist and her exhibition There and back again. Presented as part of DESIGN Canberra, the exhibition explores moments in time and experience of place, through photography and screen printing processes.

Parker has taken images of her local surrounds, childhood home and recent travels throughout Australia and abroad - a record of fleeting moments captured on her phone. She re-invents the images as screen prints - cutting down paper, mixing inks and hand printing, bringing the works slowly to life – a direct contrast to today's instantly posted image. Soft, faded backgrounds, and warm, brown/black for the images themselves, suggest these contemporary scenes are in fact of a bygone time, evoking nostalgia.

A graduate of the ANU School of Art, Parker has exhibited widely throughout Australia and abroad, and her work is held in a number of private collections. She regularly teaches screen printing on both paper and fabric, including a recent summer school in surface design and screen printing at Penland School of Crafts, North Carolina, US. Most recently, she has been shortlisted for the prestigious Fremantle Print Award.

There and back again is on from November 10-19, at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, 19 Furneaux St, Manuka. Parker will give an artist's talk on November 19, at 3pm.

For the past 50 years Canberra Spinners and Weavers has brought textile artists together to share skills, knowledge and a common delight in exquisite handmade textiles.

50 Years Looking Forward features contemporary textile works by CSW members. The exhibition comprises works using a range of techniques and styles including; spinning, weaving, knitting and dyeing.

The exhibition is curated by highly respected curator and prominent Canberra arts professional Meredith Hinchliffe.

Hinchliffe says she worked with the various groups that comprise CSW and spoke to them about their work and how they could challenge themselves to do something they wouldn't normally do … to look forward.

"Many members have risen to that challenge," she says. "There are some complex weaves and woven works as well as knitted pieces which demonstrate refined simplicity."

Alongside the anniversary exhibition, A Narrative: An Exploration of Processes and Materiality showcases the work of Christine Appleby, Jessica Ashcroft, and Jennifer Barrington, recipients of the CSW Emerging Artists Support Scheme award at the ANU School of Art.

This exhibition records the narrative of these three emerging artists celebrating the freedom of exploring material and processes across textiles, ceramics and drawing.

We love getting the review copies of the Best Australian Writing annual anthologies, which showcase our country's best and brightest writers. With volumes devoted to stories, essays and poems, this year a couple of Canberra writers and poets feature. Essays features a piece by Sam Vincent while poets John Foulcher, Paul Hetherington and Geoff Page all made the Poems list.

Head to the National Library of Australia for an evening with Michael Leunig, cartoonist and philosopher, and a glimpse into his 20th collection of cartoons, Ducks for Dark Times. Kim Mahood, award-winning Australian writer and artist, explores the mind of one of Australia's most treasured artists to find the wisdom and resilience needed for our modern lives. $20 including refreshments. M16 board member Mark Kenny (Fairfax national affairs editor) has called on some mates to form a "Artsiders" panel, a pastiche of the celebrated ABC program Insiders, including David Speers, political editor of Sky News; Laura Tingle, political editor of The Australian Financial Review and Andrew Probyn, political editor of the ABC. Hosted by Virginia Hausseggar, there'll be bubbles and canapes on arrival and a two-course meal. $125 a ticket. There'll also be a silent auction of works produced by M16 studio artists. November 14.
