Windellama ADFA bus crash: Five people discharged from hospital

The vehicle had been carrying 50 people, mainly cadets and midshipmen from ADFA, when it rolled on Sandy Point Road near Windellama, south of Goulburn, about 10am on Saturday , a Defence Force spokesman said.

It was one of four buses returning to the college after a training exercise. Only nine of the 30 injured remained in hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

Defence has declined to comment on the condition of one victim, admitted with very serious injuries, and another three, admitted with serious injuries, on privacy grounds.

ADFA personnel, meanwhile, have been praised as exceptional by the Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Vice-Admiral Ray Griggs, for their responses to the crash.

Vice-Admiral Griggs, who described the incident as "awful", said the ADFA team took their duty of care very seriously.

"Tragically, I think that showed through on the weekend," he said. "The way that was managed was, in my mind, just exceptional.

"It was exceptionally well managed from the family notifications and support to those directly involved in the hospitals [and] briefing and counselling for the rest of the cadet body.

"It just shows you've got a team that gets the full gamut of shaping, guiding and building these young people into our future leaders of the military."

ADFA Commandant, Air Commodore Alan Clements, said the academy's staff had stepped up well.

"It was a very impressive response to a complex and evolving situation both at the site and back here [at the academy]," he said.

"The leadership skills that were shown were a testament to the quality of the training and the people here at ADFA."

First responders, who included included NSW police and ambulance officers, the NSW Fire Brigade and the Rural Fire Service, were initially handicapped by the isolation of the site.

The Canberra Times previously reported that 26 people had been injured in the crash.
