She sings in a chamber singer group, conducts at least three choirs, including at DFAT and the Department of Finance, and researches choral music in her Masters degree.

And, after living and breathing the Canberra choir scene for the last six years, she says it is expanding "at a rapid rate", especially among the young.

"There are a quite a lot going in Canberra at the moment, and per-population we probably have more than other cities in Australia.

"People are starting to realise their value, they are growing in this country in a rapid rate," she said.

Ms Swift, said she has seen them strike a chord among the young, and was asked to conduct recent addition to the scene, CHOIR Canberra.

Canberra lawyer and CHOIR member Harkiran Singh Narulla, 29, sang in a choir when he was on university exchange in Uppsala, Sweden, which left an indelible impression on him.

"We would sing at spring balls and ride around on bikes serenading people. It was pretty dreamy," he said.

He said choirs may even have become hip.

"I don't know if it's a byproduct of the hipster movement making creative cultural stuff cool, but there is so many people who are actually keen," he said.

He said when he initially arrived in Canberra a few years ago, he tried out a few choirs but found most singers slightly older.

"I went to a few around the place and they were an older crowd and not singing the music I was listening to.

"Choral singing is beautiful but it's nice to hang out with a peer group," he said.

So, along with another friend he decided to start his own in November last year.

"Singing with other people it's just a very fun purifying experience. No matter what has happened in your day, you are always glowing and happy and relaxed after singing," Mr Singh Narulla said.

Ms Swift said public service choirs, including the ones she conducts, were also flowering.

"I think at the moment there is a strong government choir presence, so everyone is obviously into it at the moment," she said.

Ms Swift said she also caught the choir bug after a trip to Scandinavia.

"I went on a choir tour at school and found that in Finland or Sweden, nearly two out of three people, sing in a choir."

She said choirs were a really easy way for non-musical people to get involved.

"For a bunch of people who have never done music, it's a really accessible form of music which I think is really great," she said.

CHOIR Canberra will perform at The Front in Lyneham on July 9.

One of the choirs Ms Swift conducts, the Kompactus Youth Choir, will play Wesley Music Centre on Saturday night.
