Greens leader Richard Di Natale will lead a door-knocking blitz of suburbs north of Bell Street - Melbourne's famed ''hipster-proof curtain'' - where his party's vote has traditionally lagged behind Labor's.

The last time the seat was contested, in the 2016 federal election, Greens candidate Alex Bhathal did not out-poll her Labor opponent Dave Feeney in a single voting place in the traditionally blue-collar suburbs north of Bell Street.

But Mr Feeney managed to defeat his Greens challenger at only two booths in the rapidly gentrifying and fashionable suburbs to the south of the thoroughfare.

After November's crushing byelection win in the state seat of Northcote, which is wholly contained in the southern part of the Batman federal division, even some Labor insiders believe the Greens are unstoppable in Melbourne's inner north.

This weekend's blitz - with five of eight door-knocking efforts to take place in the north of the seat - shows a clinical Greens campaign prepared to exploit its supremacy in the south by attacking Labor in the neighbourhoods where it has traditionally been strong.

"We can't just rely on our vote south of Bell," one Greens insider said. "We have to win Labor voters in the north."

There will be two Greens door-knocking efforts in Preston, which saddles Bell Street, and two teams operating further north in blue-collar Reservoir.

More teams will be hitting doorsteps in the friendlier Greens territories of Thornbury, Clifton Hill and Northcote.

Ms Bhathal confirmed on Friday that Greens activists on the doorsteps would be hammering home familiar messages from the party: an end to offshore processing of asylum seekers, and opposition to the proposed Adani coal mine in Queensland.

"The Greens in Parliament vote to stop Adani, close down the offshore detention centres on Manus and Nauru ... while Labor votes to support Adani, keep Manus and Nauru open," Ms Bhathal said.

“We will be reaching out to people all across Batman to talk about what’s important to them."

Labor, too, was on the offensive on Friday, with popular federal frontbencher Tanya Plibersek joining her party's Batman candidate, Ged Kearney, on the campaign trail at West Preston Primary School, talking up the traditional ALP strong suit of education.

Ms Plibersek attacked her Greens opponents in Batman, accusing them of trying to vote with the Coalition to cut education funding.

"This electorate is a lot like my electorate - you've got very idealistic people who think they're being idealistic in sending a Green to Canberra," Ms Plibersek said.

"People think they're voting for a warm, fuzzy candidate, but when they get to Canberra they go missing in action or, worse still, they vote with the Liberals."

Meanwhile, the Victorian Liberals confirmed on Friday that they would not run a candidate in Batman in what will be seen as a further blow to the hopes of Labor, which survived a Greens challenge in the seat in the 2016 federal election only with the help of Liberal preferences.
