A lawyer for Slipper on Thursday told a Canberra court he would need to take instructions from his client on whether to proceed.

Slipper was on Wednesday sentenced to 300 hours community service and order to repay $954 for defrauding the Commonwealth.

In July, a Canberra magistrate found he had acted dishonestly and knowingly caused a risk of loss to the Commonwealth when he misused his travel entitlements to take taxpayer funded trips to some of the Canberra region's most prestigious wineries in 2010.

Slipper appealed the conviction in August, before the court had even handed down sentence.

Court documents, lodged last month, said Slipper would appeal the guilty verdict on 13 grounds and seek to have the guilty verdict set aside, with finding of not guilty entered in relation to the three charges.

The grounds said the verdicts had been unsafe as the magistrate had drawn inferences of dishonesty not supported by the evidence, failed to take into account procedures which allowed the repayment of monies claimed, erred in refusing to allow cross-examination of a Finance Department official, and erred in finding evidence established beyond reasonable doubt that Slipper had travelled for "private purposes".

The appeal papers said Slipper's lawyers would put further evidence before the court, in the form of two news reports published by Fairfax Media.

One report, from October 2013, outlines how Prime Minister Tony Abbott was permitted to repay expenses after claiming entitlements to attend Sophie Mirabella's wedding.

A directions hearing on Thursday listed the appeal for two-days in December before Justic John Burns.

It will come back before the court for mention next month.
