For Alex and Dene Gambotto, of Northbridge, in Sydney's north, last night was the perfect date for their wedding at Sergeants' Mess, Chowder Bay.

The venue already has a New Year's Eve wedding booked in for this year. ''A typical request is always if they can have their own fireworks,'' the event and sales co-ordinator Francesca Donovan said.

Two other Grand Pacific Group venues, Dunbar House and The Tearoom Gunners' Barracks, hosted New Year nuptials last night.

However, opinions are divided as to whether it is a social faux pas to gatecrash New Year's Eve with a personal occasion such as a wedding. The Sydney editor of Complete Wedding magazine, Josie Mcleod, has known guests to be irritated when their big day overlaps with a footy final - let alone a communal celebration such as New Year's Eve.

''If you're not wanting to step on people's toes, which inevitably you do at a wedding, you don't want to compete with a big event,'' Mcleod said.

But couples typically changed their minds after finding out the cost, said the owner of Couture Wedding Planning, Fiona Deans-Dundas, who said prices were at least 20 per cent higher than on an average wedding day.

''Logistics on New Year's Eve are always hard to organise,'' she said.

What do the etiquette rules say?

The author of Charm School: The Modern Girls Complete Handbook of Etiquette, Kathy Buchanan, said a New Year's Eve wedding may cause headaches for guests as accommodation was scarce. Otherwise, it was fine, provided the bride and groom pulled out all the stops.

''As long as you are prepared to offer up free Bollinger all night and are planning on keeping the night going until the wee hours … you'll no doubt have some happy guests along for the ride into 2012,'' she said.

The newly wed Mrs Gambotto, 35, a director of a recruitment business, was confident her 130 guests would go home happy this morning. A seasoned party thrower with a $100,000 budget, she made sure the reception stretched to 1am.

''As you get older, you want to go to a decent party, so for us we always throw great parties down to the details,'' she said.

''If we weren't getting married on New Year's Eve we would have been holding a party anyway.''
