Rees finds way to evict pedophile

23 Sep, 2009 11:18 AM
THE Rees Government will introduce extraordinary legislation to allow it to evict the convicted pedophile Dennis Ferguson.

Mr Ferguson, who is at an undisclosed location after threats from vigilantes, was threatening to return to his public housing flat in Ryde where neighbours had protested against his presence.

An extraordinary cabinet meeting last night approved a special bill which will allow the Government to move child-sex offenders from public housing without worrying about lease agreements.

Mr Ferguson served 14 years in jail for kidnapping three children and sexually assaulting them in Brisbane two decades ago. He was released in 2003 and has been run out of several Queensland towns, and was recently provided with housing in Ryde before residents' protests forced him into hiding.

The Government had been concerned that his return to Ryde might provoke violent protests.

Government sources said an initial proposal to introduce the legislation was put to a cabinet meeting on Monday but was viewed as ''too rushed and rough'' and the minister was told to do some more work on it.

''I asked the ministers for Housing and Police to find a solution to the difficult decisions we have with Dennis Ferguson,'' the Premier, Nathan Rees, said. The Housing Minister, David Borger, had found a way ''through this minefield'' and would introduce the legislation today.

Under the bill, police would have to seek Government permission for a person on the child- sex offence register to be moved.

Brett Collins, the co-ordinator of advocacy group Justice Action, labelled the new legislation ''over the top'' saying the Government was ''unprincipled'' in devising ''outrageous policy on the run''.

''They want to introduce a Dennis Ferguson Act,'' he said. It ''shows total lack of regard to the entitlement of a person to [have a place to live]''.

Mr Collins said the Government had a duty to the community to provide a safe neighbourhood. But it also had a duty to Mr Ferguson who, he said, ''had done nothing wrong'' since his conviction, 22 years ago.

Greg Barns, the director of the Australian Lawyers Alliance, said the legislation was ''a case of a government caving into vigilantism''. ''It will not help sex offenders to rehabilitate but rather provide another stress for them on release from prison.''

Well, that's a start - but where are they going to move him to (where there are no children)??? Brett Collins, how can you have a "Safe neighbourhood" & provide pedophiles with a place to live too??? Greg Barns, pedophiles cannot be rehabilitated & should never be released from prison. I dont give a toss (to put it mildly) if the legislation provides another stress for 'them'. Maybe, Brett, Greg and Dennis can all share a kennel together at the pound.

This guy lost his "rights" 20 years ago when he abducted those children. The do-gooders should think about the rights of parents and children to be able to live without the fear of a pedophile being nearby. Listening to this animal talk conveys the impression that he is neither sorry for what he did or that he is reformed. He is not worth the sympathy.

I have to raise some questions about the slective regime being applied by the NSW premier. NSW sex education expert professor Anne Mitchel from Latrobe university recently banned a teaching concerning abortion being taught in our school's because there were Christian's involved with this program. However professor Anne Miotchel is also the chari person for the Victorian gay and lesbian community. Now the gay position has nothing to do with producing children but rather they hold a reductionist position. Reductionism has nothing to do with personality or moral motions but rather linguistic. Why pick on these men when the gay community are being allowed a free crack at our children by pumping their reductionist postion as normal and the heteerosexual postions as abnormal. When will Australia really be a free country? I think when they address the widely known indigenous issues and the influences of the gay community upon society through education and the courts. Recently a gay teacher was given a free right to continue a gay relationship with a minor. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to work this one out. I suppose because our whole history and political system being selective

I dont question the legislation, what I question is how this person, convicted pedophile was able to obtain a Housing Commission unit, when there are thousands of other needy people in line. He wasnt even a resident in NSW until he got this unit, so what rules were bent to get him into accommodation in the first place.
