BRITISH billionaire Sir Richard Branson has abandoned his bid to break the trans-Atlantic speed record after a 12-metre wave ripped the mainsail of his single-hulled yacht.

The entrepreneur (pictured) and his crew made the decision when the 30-metre Virgin Money was about 965kilometres from New York. No one on the yacht was injured.
In a conference call from the yacht, he said: "We got taken by one monster wave that hit us from behind All the crew were harnessed in and so everyone was safe."
