The whereabouts of the other 20 were unknown.

Police released the identities and home addresses in Pakistan of the nine gunmen who died during the attack on India's financial centre - a move designed to increase pressure on the Pakistani Government.

It was the first time Indian police had disclosed the larger number of recruits, all of whom it says belonged to the Pakistani militant organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba. Police said there was no reason to believe the other 20 were in India but expressed concern about that possibility.

"Another 20 were ready to die," Deven Bharti, a Mumbai police deputy commissioner, said. "This is the very disturbing part of it."

Images of eight of the nine were also made public. Some were passport photographs, others had been taken after the attackers had been killed.

Pakistan's Prime Minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, confirmed yesterday that two members of Lashkar-e-Taiba had been taken into custody: Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and Zarar Shah.

It was unclear whether Massod Azhar, head of Jaish-e-Mohammad, was under house arrest. Azhar is one of India's most-wanted men and is accused of masterminding an attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001.

Pakistan has declared it will not hand over any terrorist suspects it has arrested, although ministers have offered Indian officials the chance to interview those detained as part of a "joint investigation".

India has made a formal request to the United Nations to put the group Jamat-ud-Dawah and its leader on the list of individuals and organisations sanctioned by the UN for being associated with terrorism.

The request, distributed to all 15 Security Council members, accused the organisation and its leader, Hafiz Muhammed Saeed, of being interchangeable with Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The names of the nine dead terrorists were given as: Ismail Khan; Hafeez Arshad; Javed, also known as Abdul Ali; Shoaib; Nazir, alias Abu Omer; Nasir, alias Abu Omar; Babar Imran; Abdul Rehman, and Fahadullah.

Three of the men were from Multan, two from Faisalabad, one from Sialkot and two from the same Okara district as Ajmal Ameer Kasab, the only gunman captured alive.

The leader of the group was named as Khan, whose home is in Dera Ismail Khan, a town in the badlands near the border with Afghanistan. Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of Mumbai police, said Khan's expertise with the global positioning system marked him out.
