Thankfully for Canberrans returning from school holidays, technicians were able to fix the bridge and the road reopened about three hours later.
Motorists were earlier warned to delay their travels, and there were reports of traffic jams stretching for kilometres in the area.
According to Transport for NSW Management Centre spokesman Alf Paranihi, traffic was returning normal on the road as of 2.55pm.
He said he'd never heard of bridge becoming stuck open before.
A NSW Police spokeswoman had earlier said a cable had broken on the bridge, and a mechanic had been called to fix it.
The police spokeswoman said at 1pm on Saturday the road would remain closed for a few hours, at least.
