But in a bitter end to his Olympic campaign, Kyrgios accused the Australian Olympic Committee of "unfair and unjust" treatment as he fired a broadside at team officials when he quit on Friday.

Kyrgios pulled the pin on his Olympic gold medal ambitions by releasing a stinging statement, which can be read in full below, that was aimed at the AOC and chef de mission Kitty Chiller after a very public stoush.

The 21-year-old said Chiller's attacks on him were unwarranted after the Australian Olympic boss put him on watch and criticised his behaviour.

The AOC and Chiller responded by saying "every athlete in contention is treated equally and fairly".

Tennis Australia also weighed in, with president Steve Healy adding, "we are very disappointed that [Kyrgios] has been put in this position."

The news came less than a month after Bernard Tomic withdrew from Olympic selection contention, and now Australia's top two males won't compete in Rio.

Chiller took a hard-line stance against Kyrgios and Tomic and questioned whether they knew what it meant to be an Australian Olympian.

Her comments hit a nerve in the Kyrgios camp and the world No. 19 followed Tomic's lead by ruling himself out of the Games.

Kyrgios was part of an Olympic uniform fitting session early last year and was excited at the prospect of representing Australia at the Games.

But he took offence to being lumped into Tomic's situation and the way Chiller singled him out as a player with behaviour issues.

"It is with heavy heart that I have had to make a decision not to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro," Kyrgios wrote.

"Coming to this decision has been a lengthy and difficult process, and I am extremely disappointed to have been put in this unfortunate position.

" ... While I have expressed every intention of trying to win a medal for my country in Rio, it's very clear to me that the Australian Olympic Committee has other plans.

"AOC's unfair and unjust treatment of me over the last four weeks, as well as the organization's crystal clear position on whether they want me to be a part of the Australian Olympic team, has solidified my final decision.

"While I have received assurances from Tennis Australia that I will be nominated for the Olympic team, the AOC has chosen to publicly and privately disparage me."

Tomic withdrew from the Olympics in May, meaning Australia's top two-ranked tennis men are now out of the Rio campaign.

At the time Chiller said: "We've had nothing official [from Kyrgios] apart from some ill-advised comments about me and what it means to be an Olympian. I think some of Nick's comments in social media in the past week shows he doesn't really understand what it means to be an Australian Olympian."

Kyrgios' behaviour has been under the microscope for the past year after his infamous sledge in a match against Stan Wawrinka that made worldwide headlines.

However he appeared to be trying to curb his on-court outbursts and was in stellar form with a superb record against top-10 players this year that was only matched by world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

Kyrgios said he did not want his ongoing battle with the AOC to be a distraction for the Australian team.

It's ironic given Chiller's initial stance was taken to stop Kyrgios from being a distraction for the team when it arrived in Rio.

The AOC only found out about Kyrgios' withdrawal via his social media posts and a link to his website.

"Tennis Australia is due to nominate athletes to the AOC for selection on the 30th of June," Chiller said in a statement.

"The International Tennis Federation rankings are released on June 6th. On the 9th of June the ITF will inform the AOC of eligible players.

" ... At this point, Nick Kyrgios, or any other tennis athlete, has not been nominated for selection on the Australian Olympic Team. In regard to selection every athlete in contention is treated equally and fairly."

Tennis Australia has publicly backed Kyrgios, while Australian great Todd Woodbridge was among several who said Olympic officials had made an error in targeting the Canberran.

Healy said: "We understand Nick's decision and totally support him and his right to make it.

"But we are very disappointed that he has been put in this position. Nick is a passionate competitor and he's working hard to learn and mature in a highly pressurised environment where he is under constant public scrutiny.

"But now Nick has made this difficult decision we should let him focus on his tennis without further distraction."

Not one member of the AOC has reached out to me, my family, my team, or representatives of Tennis Australia, asking for a meeting or the opportunity to discuss their concerns. The AOC's unwarranted attacks on me demonstrate the organization's inability to understand the circumstances surrounding highly competitive sports. I also don't want the AOC's treatment of me to become a distraction and negatively affect the Australian Olympic team.

I am grateful to Tennis Australia for standing by me through this process and nominating me for the team. I also want to thank the public and the members of the media who have voiced their support.

I am a proud Australian and have always loved representing my country. I am fortunate to be young enough to hopefully have a chance to wear the green and gold at the Olympics in the future. I hope that in four years I will find myself in the position to be a part of the Australian Olympic team.

I would like to wish every athlete representing Australia the best of luck this August and will be following their progress and supporting and cheering them from afar.

He has received support from a lot of other tennis players and athletes.

But now Nick has made this difficult decision we should let him focus on his tennis without further distraction.
