No applicants for $1 million greyhound industry transition package

Greyhound racing and trialling was banned in Canberra at the beginning of last month.

Those affected by the closure of the industry were eligible to apply for support through the transition package, which came from money the ACT government previously gave to the industry each year.

About 50 people were expected to be put out of work because of the shutdown of the industry.

However in budget estimates on Tuesday, ACT government officials said no one affected by the closure had applied.

“We do understand however we are expecting applications for rehoming support for greyhounds and it’s possible there may be applications from some of the workers at the Canberra greyhound racing track but as yet we’ve not seen anything come through," the deputy director-general of policy and cabinet in the Chief Minister's Directorate, Lisa Croke, said.

"I haven't checked the website this morning but as far as I know we haven’t seen anything."

Applications for the transition package close on June 30, but will be considered until September 30.

Ms Croke said there would be some "flexibility" if an application was a day late, however a formal extension of the application period was up to government.

"I think the timeframe around the application process has been very clear and we’ve undertaken a number of communication and engagement activities around that, it’s up to I suppose the potential applicants to get those applications in," she said.

"They don't have to a this point of time put a full application in at all, they just need to let us know that they’re interested in applying to be part of the process."

The Canberra Greyhound Racing Club has moved its operations to Goulburn as it tries to overturn the ACT ban in court.

Those who race greyhounds in Canberra now risk a $15,000 fine, one year in jail or both.
