It would be alleged a man entered a Sunnybank Hills home with a firearm and demanded a woman hand over the keys to a Mitsubishi station wagon about 9.10pm on Wednesday.
He fled the scene and was spotted by an off-duty police officer 20 minutes later at Doolandella.
The officer directed police crews to the location and the alleged robber was arrested.
A search of the station wagon uncovered a sawn-off shotgun and an axe, police would allege.
A 29-year-old Yeronga man was charged with one count each of armed robbery, enter dwelling with intent, unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence, and possession of explosives (ammunition).
He was due to appear in the Richlands Magistrates Court on Thursday.
