Brisbane City Council announced plans for the Woolloongabba bikeway in October 2016, and on Thursday will unveil the final design, including permanent bike lanes, for the 2.5-kilometre corridor.

The project would extend 1.1 kilometres along Stanley Street between Ipswich Road in Woolloongabba and Dock Street in South Brisbane, and 1.4 kilometres along Annerley Road between Stanley Street, Woolloongabba and Gladstone Road, Dutton Park.

More than 50 cyclist accidents, including two deaths, had occurred along the stretch in the past eight years.

Council Public and Active Transport chairman Adrian Schrinner said permanent bike lanes on Annerley Road and Stanley Street would be installed as part of the city's largest new bikeway.

“In a Brisbane-first, the project will also including the installation of floating bus stops and audible line markings along Annerley Road, helping to separate motorists from the 700 cyclists who ride along Annerley Road daily,” he said.

“A two-way bike lane is set to be constructed between Ipswich Road and Vulture Street, where the Kangaroo Point Bikeway project will commence, providing the 1200 cyclists who use Stanley Street every day with a safer alternative to mingling with motorists.”

A new City Cycle station would also be installed on Annerley Road near the Stanley Street intersection as part of the upgrade.

Bicycle Queensland chief-executive Anne Savage said the bikeway project would enhance cycling connectivity from the suburbs to the CBD.

“There can be no doubt that the Woolloongabba Bikeway will enhance cycling uptake and increase levels of cycling,” Ms Savage said.

“More than 45,000 vehicles use this transport corridor every day – providing safe, separated cycleways for bike riders is key to keeping Brisbane moving.

“This project will be a game-changer for Brisbane drivers and riders.”

Construction was expected to start mid-2018.
