A driver has escaped without injury when a fuel tanker on Landsborough Highway had caught on fire while heading towards Barcaldine in north-west Queensland.

Four crews arrived on scene to find a prime mover and the first cabin on fire while two other cabins had been detached and remained safe on the highway after receiving a call at 5.20am on Monday.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said the fire was extinguished by 6.30am.

Police were on scene while the highway was closed for a short period but had since been reopened.
