Paramedics were called to the home in Ferny Grove on Sunday night to attend the man who was injured when lightning struck near his home.

About 50,000 homes remained without power at 7am, down from a high of more than 130,000 shortly after the storm cleared.

Fire crews were called to a Gold Coast residential skyscraper about 7pm after reports smoke was billowing out from the top of the building.

The top levels of the Q1 tower were evacuated before it was determined the smoke was actually steam emitted from the heat of numerous strikes hitting the tower’s lightning rod.

Trains along the Gold Coast and Beenleigh lines were delayed on Monday morning as crews worked to remove debris from the tracks following the severe storm.

At least two schools were closed across south-east Queensland due to storm damage, including Crestmead State School and Stuarthold School at Toowong, which was left without water or functioning toilets.

Other schools could be closed on Monday as repair crews work to reconnect the power. The education department is expected to issue a statement shortly.

Logan and Brisbane were most affected, with more than 55,000 homes in Logan and 32,000 homes in Brisbane losing power as wind gusts approached the 100km/h mark in some locations.

"There was enormous damage. We had over 400 wires on the ground," Energy Queensland chief executive Paul Jordan told the Nine network.

That was down to about 280 by Monday morning but authorities were warning people in storm-affected areas to be aware of the dangers of downed lines.

In Brisbane, fans of US band Paramore had to evacuate the Riverstage venue before the show began, running for cover as a spectacular and dangerous light show unleashed.

The wild weather, after a day of baking heat across much of Queensland, generated more than 265,000 lightning strikes.

Parts of south-east Queensland fell short of the maximum temperatures forecast by the weather bureau as the severe storms rolled in late on Sunday afternoon.

Tens of thousands of Queenslanders flocked to the beaches having been warned of the approaching heatwave, but some top temperatures didn't quite hit the mark.

Brisbane was warned to brace for 36 degrees on Sunday but peaked at 34.5. Coolangatta was expecting to reach 33 degrees but fell three short and the Gold Coast was also forecast to hit 33 but only reached 31.6 degrees.

However, Birdsville, in western Queensland, exceeded its forecast top of 44 by half a degree and Charleville, in southern Queensland, hit 43 degrees, one degree warmer than expected.

The end of the weekend was marked by the arrival of severe storms over the south-east, threatening parts of the Logan, Scenic Rim, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Somerset, Southern Downs, Toowoomba, Lockyer Valley, Redland City, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions.

ilcoy, about 100 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, Maryvale, about 130 kilometres south-east of Brisbane, and the Border Ranges National Park, just over the border.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned damaging winds and large hailstones were likely, with Boonah, Beaudesert, Beenleigh, Laidley and Caloundra expected to be hit by 6.15pm.

An estimated 100,000 Queenslanders flocked to the state's beaches on Saturday and an estimated 130,000 on Sunday, according to Surf Life Saving Queensland.

Looking ahead, the central interior and northern Queensland are expected to hit tops of 45 degrees in the coming days, while parts of the south-east are set to surpass the 40-degree mark.

Temperatures in Brisbane are forecast to reach 35 degrees on Monday, about five degrees above the monthly average, while Gatton is expecting a top of 41.

If you thought that was bad, spare a thought for those living in the likes of Birdsville and Longreach. They are forecast to climb to highs of 44 and 45 degrees.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the "only saving grace" was the refreshing sea breeze for those near the coast, otherwise, temperatures in many parts of the state were expected to be eight to nine degrees above average.

BoM meteorologist Lauren Pattie said a stagnant air mass was forecast to linger over Queensland until the end of next week, with the humidity also expected to intensify with the temperatures.
