Taylor, who has a short-term training contract with the Raiders, declared he wants to "do good for Canberra" if he's given the chance to make a rugby league comeback next year.

It comes as the Raiders announced that their first home game of the 2017 season will be against defending premiers the Cronulla Sharks in a round-two blockbuster on March 11.

The full NRL draw will be published on Thursday, but a clash against the Sharks will have the Green Machine desperate for revenge after losing a home final to Cronulla in September.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart gave Taylor a lifeline for a return to the NRL by giving him an opportunity to do pre-season training in Canberra.

If Taylor meets his fitness targets and proves to the players and coaches he has the right attitude, the 123 kilogram wrecking ball could add a new dimension to a monster Raiders forward pack.

But his future will hinge on discussions between Taylor, the Raiders and NRL officials as the Green Machine wait to see if the NRL would re-register Taylor.

It's understood the Raiders were waiting to speak with Taylor and will make contact with the NRL integrity unit before mapping a path forward.

Taylor started training with Canberra on Monday but faces a possible suspension or penalty from the NRL.

Cronulla Sharks premiership-winning fullback Ben Barba tested positive to cocaine after the NRL grand final in October and was suspended for 12 games.

It's unclear if Taylor faces a similar sanction but he is expected to return to Canberra to continue training in a bid to resurrect his career.

"I'm looking to move on and leave everything behind me and hopefully do good for Canberra," he said from outside Southport District Court on the Gold Coast.

Judge Katherine McGuiness said Taylor had set a poor example to children but decided not to record convictions, which could have stopped him from playing overseas.

Taylor, now attempting to restart his career on a train and trial deal with Canberra, pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing a dangerous drug, namely cocaine, in August and September of 2014 when he was playing for the Gold Coast Titans.

Defence lawyer Campbell MacCallum told Southport District Court that the former Queensland and Australian star had suffered a marriage breakdown and an 80 per cent hit in earnings due to the scandal.

"He has come back to Australia and lost approximately $200,000 due to the quick sale of his house, which was required due to the breakdown of his marriage," Mr MacCallum said.

"The breakdown of the marriage is a direct result of the stresses that were put upon himself and his wife and the media attention at the time the offences were committed."

He also said the NRL's integrity unit was waiting for a sentencing report before determining what punishment it would hand down to the 28-year-old.

Taylor's sentencing comes after fellow former Gold Coast players Joe Vickery and Jamie Dowling were handed fines and community service orders earlier this year.

Judge McGuiness said she took into account Taylor's Canberra NRL contract and didn't believe it would be fair to have him travel back to Queensland for community service.

She accepted his actions were "out-of-character" but reminded him he had set a poor example in the public eye.

"You were in the media spotlight, that has led to you suffering in a way greater than other people too," she said.

"But it also led to you setting a very bad example to children and young adults in the community."
