Bird is back in Australia after playing in Saturday's Prime Minister's XIII win over Papua New Guinea, and will link up with his new club in November barring a shock call-up to Mal Meninga's 24-man World Cup squad next week.

Yet just what number he will wear at the Broncos next season remains to be seen.

The 22-year-old ex-Shark has proven himself one of the NRL's most malleable players in his first three seasons, capable of assuming almost every position in the backline, and also in the forwards.

He's the perfect man for Bennett as he looks to reshuffle his new-look side, which is losing half Ben Hunt, international prop Adam Blair, Jai Arrow, Benji Marshall, Herman Ese'Ese and Tautau Moga.

"There was talks there about being in the halves because of Benny Hunt leaving, but I'm not sure to be honest where I'm going to play up there," Bird said.

"I play a lot of positions, I just enjoy playing football. As long as I'm playing, I'm enjoying it. I'm sure Wayne has a plan, and if he didn't have a plan he wouldn't have signed me.

"It's one reason why I went there to be honest, to play under Wayne. I'm really looking forward to it, and looking forward to the journey ahead and hopefully we can go one step further next year."

Bird played most of 2017 at centre for Cronulla, the position he played 12 months ago when the Sharks won their first premiership.

He could easily slot in at centre under Bennett partnering James Roberts, with Anthony Milford and livewire Kodi Nikorima in the halves.

Yet Bird could just as easily play at five-eighth alongside Milford in a dynamic halves partnership, with Nikorima to add spark off the bench.

Bennett also has the option of adding a few kilograms to Bird's frame and using him at lock in place of Josh McGuire, who could be pushed into the front row to cover Blair's move to the New Zealand Warriors.

Brisbane were belted 30-0 in Melbourne by the Storm on Friday night, ending their quest for a first premiership since 2006.

About 3100km away, Bird watched his future teammates in the confines of his Port Moresby hotel, the night before helping the PM's XIII down Papua New Guinea 48-8.

"I thought they played all right in the first 40 minutes, that try at the end from Melbourne just before half-time, that would've hurt them very much," Bird said.

"Going into the sheds two-nil down would've been good. Unfortunately they went in eight-nil and they came out pretty slow in the second half.

"Obviously their last play options weren't very good, they weren't kicking it, they weren't completing sets. That hurts in a prelim, you need that control and they didn't do that."
