The Brumbies will return to training refreshed on Monday as they begin preparations for a clash against the Queensland Reds at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.

The match will be the return of former Brumbies skipper Stephen Moore, who moved back to Queensland at the end of last year.

It will also be the first time Brumbies champion George Smith has played against the club as he wears an unfamiliar red jersey on to Canberra Stadium.

But most of the talk over the past two weeks has been about the Brumbies' attacking prowess and former Wallaby Mark Ella criticised the team's "basic and boring" use of the maul.

The Brumbies have a 93 per cent lineout success rate and use the maul to set up their attacking play.

The reality of their attack is that only three of their 13 tries this year have been from mauls and coach Stephen Larkham has introduced innovative lineout moves to catch defences off guard.

"The boys out wide haven't seen too much ball at the moment, but that has been because of conditions," said inside centre Kyle Godwin.

"The try [Chris Alcock] scored showed there's something else and we go into each week with something new.

"We've got variation in our game and I don't think we're too predictable. It's funny because [All Blacks No. 9] Aaron Smith said to me at the bottom of the ruck that we had all the tricks.

"We're keeping teams honest. We can't shy away from our strengths and that is what our rolling maul is. So why not use that and get the win?

"It's about throwing different pictures and the opposition to see what they can handle."

The Brumbies have won just two of their five games but have won plenty of praise for their gutsy defence in three tight losses.

They need to beat the Reds to stamp their claim for the Australian conference title and have a chance to extend their unbeaten derby run to 10 wins in a row.

Larkham has signalled he will continue a rotation policy by making more changes to his starting XV to give players a chance to step up and prove themselves.

Lock Blake Enever is in a battle to keep his spot as Wallabies second-rower Rory Arnold and Tom Staniforth attempt to usurp him.

"It keeps you really keen and making sure you're on top of your game so that if you get a chance to step in, you're good to go," Enever said.

"It makes training more competitive and I think it's working for the team. There are a lot of blokes knocking on the door and we want the opportunities as well.

"We've got some awesome backs as well. We put a lot of work into our maul and we do want to get some pay when we use it. I think teams have to be wary we've got other things that are our strengths."

Brumbies hooker Josh Mann-Rea is still battling a knee problem, leaving Robbie Abel and Saia Faingaa to compete for a starting position.

Abel looms as the front runner and it will give him a chance to clash against former mentor Moore, who spent seven seasons in Canberra from 2009-16.
