Hamlin joined the Brumbies on Tuesday and could be a surprise inclusion for the Brisbane 10s tournament this weekend after star No. 9 Tomas Cubelli suffered a likely season-ending knee injury.

Cubelli's torn patellar tendon was another blow to the Brumbies' preparations, with skipper Christian Lealiifano (leukaemia) and Lausii Taliauli (knee) also unlikely to play this year.

But the injuries could open the door to a shock recruitment bid for Wallabies winger Drew Mitchell, who said he could be tempted to join the Brumbies for a Super Rugby comeback.

The Brumbies will go head to head with Mitchell in the pool stages at the Brisbane 10s when he plays for French glamour club Toulon.

Mitchell would be the perfect replacement for Taliauli and could add valuable experience to the Brumbies' back line, but it's understood his preference is to be based in Sydney.

"Where my head's at, I'm leaning towards coming home," Mitchell said after landing in Brisbane on Tuesday.

"[I'm] maybe open to the Brumbies, not so much about being open to Canberra. I don't know how I'd do there.

"I've spoken about wanting to come home and finish but they're discussions I've got to have with people at home - whether they want to, or whether they want you to could be two different things. Hopefully it's not.

"I've been speaking with [Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal] a couple of times but unfortunately I got injured, so those talks have been put on ice. I'm not really too sure where I stand with him."

The former Queensland Reds, Western Force and NSW Waratahs flyer has been plagued by injuries for the past 10 months, but is ready to throw himself into the 10s at Suncorp Stadium.

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham will have a front-row seat to the action when he makes a comeback of his own as the wildcard player for his team.

Larkham and dual international Andrew Walker will turn back the clock to join a young Brumbies roster for its final preparation for the Super Rugby season.

Hamlin could also be a late inclusion to the squad after emerging as a contender for Super Rugby selection following Cubelli's injury.

Cubelli had surgery on Tuesday and faces a six-month stint on the sideline, all but ruling him out of the entire season.

Hamlin played for the Brumbies at the World Club 10s in Mauritius last year and has been on the club's radar since he was a schoolboy star.

Joe Powell is set to step up and take Cubelli's starting position while Hamlin could compete with 18-year-old Ryan Lonergan for a spot on the bench.

"[The injury] is really disappointing for Tomas but the team as well," said Brumbies veteran Andrew Smith.

"He's been a really key member for us, but it's an opportunity for a few young guys to put up their hand.

"They've been developing really well under [Cubelli] so it's a great opportunity to for them to push their case."

Anthony Faingaa will return to Canberra this week after finishing his stint for the Kintetsu Liners in Japan.

Faingaa is a Queanbeyan junior and made his Super Rugby debut for the Brumbies in 2007, but has spent the past eight seasons playing for Queensland.
