But the Brumbies are unlikely to make a play for in-limbo scrumhalf Will Genia despite the impending departure of Tomas Cubelli at the end of the season.

The Brumbies will fly to Hamilton on Thursday for the last game of the Super Rugby regular season before hosting a play-off game at Canberra Stadium on July 21.

Toua has been ruled out of the rest of the season after injuring his ankle last week, and it is understood he has signed a deal to play in the Japan Top League at the end of the Super Rugby campaign.

The Brumbies are keen to add Toua to their 2018 roster and the 27-year-old is believed to have a clause in his Japanese contract allowing him to make a Super Rugby return.

However, the ARU is taking a tough stance on players doubling up on contracts in a bid to stem the flow of talent leaving Australia.

The ARU will axe either the Melbourne Rebels or Western Force from Super Rugby next season and Toua's future is also uncertain as he waits to see if he will be allowed to return to Canberra.

Toua has played every game since linking with the Brumbies last season and just one of his his 30 games has been as a reserve back.

But a high-ankle sprain prematurely ended his season in a harsh blow to what could be the end of his immediate Brumbies career after six Super Rugby seasons.

The Brumbies will call on squad reinforcements this week with Toua, Kyle Godwin (knee) and Chris Alcock set to miss the clash against the Waikato Chiefs on Saturday.

Coach Stephen Larkham could shake up his side given the Brumbies will likely play the Chiefs in the first week of the finals as well, opening the door for Cubelli to get his first start of the season.

Cubelli will leave Canberra at the end of the season after finishing a two-year stint in the capital.

It is believed the Brumbies have all but finalised a deal to add Matt Lucas to their roster to join Joe Powell and Ryan Lonergan as scrumhalves, but Wallabies No. 9 Will Genia is also looking for a home.

The Brumbies have not spoken with Genia or his management and it's unlikely he will be added to the squad given Powell has shown his capabilities as a Test scrumhalf.

Argentina international Cubelli made his comeback from a knee injury last week and is itching for more game time if given the chance against the Chiefs.

"For me, any minutes I can play before the finals will be good

"I'm coming back from injury, I feel fit enough but you never know. Game fitness is another thing, so I'm looking forward to having as many minutes as I can.

"We don't have to stress too much about changes this week. We've been all working in this system so everyone can fill positions ... we just have to be confident and trust we've put the work in."
