The Brumbies are already taking applications for the head coaching job with Larkham set to join the Wallabies in a full-time assistant's role from the end of 2017.

The fast-tracked progress could even see a replacement appointed before the Brumbies have even played a game next year if the selection process goes smoothly.

It is hoped the winning candidate will be able to work with Larkham for a handover period and the timing of opening the applications ensures the Brumbies won't miss out on international candidates.

The Brumbies had their final training session of the year on Tuesday, slogging it out in the Canberra heat before taking a two-week break.

Larkham will swap his clipboard for boots when the Brumbies return to training in January, with the former Super Rugby title winner and World Cup champion to make a playing comeback in the Brisbane 10s.

But officials have been working behind the scenes to put a coaching application process in place to find someone who can guide the club into the future.

Brumbies chairman Robert Kennedy confirmed applications will close early next year with interviews to likely to begin before the first game of the Super Rugby season against the Canterbury Crusaders on February 25.

New Brumbies chief executive Michael Thomson will begin his tenure on January 24 and is keen to involve Larkham in the coaching recruitment process.

The Brumbies will form a selection panel in the coming months to narrow their search.

"We've got a process in place and the ads for a new coach are out," Kennedy said.

"The applications close in mid-January and we'll be doing some interviews after that. We're hoping by the end of February if it moves quickly we'll be in a position to make an announcement.

"That will give us a chance to plan for a handover to take place well before 2018. The administration of it is going now and the coaching search will be Michael's first task."

Larkham announced in October that the 2017 Super Rugby season would be his last at the Brumbies.

He will step down to join the Wallabies in a full-time role ahead of the 2019 World Cup and is viewed as the heir apparent to Wallabies coach Michael Cheika.

Meanwhile, the Brumbies constitutional changes will see the club's annual general meeting postponed until February.

The Brumbies have traditional reported their financial position at the end of each year, but changes to the club's governance to align with the Corporations Act will delay the board meeting.

It is expected the Brumbies will report a financial loss when directors and voting members meet, but it is hoped a new major sponsor partner will ease financial pressure.

The annual general meeting was also pushed back to give a new board member selection process as much time as possible to allow candidates to adjust.

"The new constitution aligns with the Corporations Act and the AGM has to be within five months of end of the financial year," Kennedy said.

"The basic reason for delaying it was under our new skills-based selection process for board members to give it enough time to be thorough and proper. We didn't want to rush it."

Interim Brumbies chief executive Phil Thomson will finish his time in the job at the end of the week and then end a 24-year career in rugby on December 31.

Thomson was working at the Brumbies on secondment from his position as the ARU integrity manager. However, he will not return to the role and ends his career in rugby administration 20 years after being the Brumbies' inaugural Super Rugby team manager.
