Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham revealed he hoped to speak with Giteau in the coming days to see if his departure from French giant Toulon will open the door for a Super Rugby comeback.

Mitchell is also on the radar for a potential late addition to the Brumbies squad after flyer Lausii Taliauli suffered a suspected season-ending knee injury in a trial match last weekend.

Brumbies championship winner and Wallabies veteran Giteau announced on Monday night he was leaving Toulon at the end of the European season to move his career to Japan.

The Brumbies are hoping schedules will align and allow Giteau to add playmaker experience to the club's roster this year in the absence of Christian Lealiifano and Matt Toomua.

Toulon's season will end in May while the Japanese season begins in November. The Super Rugby runs from February to August, leaving a small window for Giteau to join the Brumbies.

However, if Giteau was keen to join the Brumbies for the majority of the season he could secure an early release from his Toulon contract.

Giteau's presence would add leadership to the Brumbies' roster as Larkham prepares to unveil his captain at the club's season launch on Wednesday morning.

Senior players Scott Fardy, Sam Carter and Scott Sio will come into contention to fill in for Lealiifano, who is continuing his treatment for leukaemia.

Giteau captained the Brumbies in 2011 and when asked if the Super Rugby title winner was a recruitment option for the Brumbies, Larkham said: "Potentially, I'm always open to someone like Matt coming back.

"He's a bit of a local legend and held in high respect among the boys. This generation really respects him and I'm sure they'd love to play with him.

"All options are open. I've spoken to Gits before about coming back to the timing hasn't quite worked. I know he's off contract with Toulon and has a bit of a break for Japan.

"It's a conversation I'll try to have with him in the next week. I've spoken to him about coming back through [Canberra] before going to Japan."

Giteau, 34, will leave Toulon after six years at the French glamour club, saying: "Making this decision was the toughest of my rugby career but it is the best for my family to be closer to Australia."

The Brumbies are set to throw an untested flyhalf into Super Rugby when their season begins against the Canterbury Crusaders on February 25, with Wharenui Hawera, Nick Jooste and Kyle Goodwin the No. 10 options.

Giteau, a 103-Test veteran, would be the perfect man to offer guidance and help usher in a new generation.

Mitchell could also offer valuable experience to the Brumbies roster, with the 71-cap Wallaby believed to be joining Giteau in a Toulon exit.

It's understood Mitchell's preference would be to be based in Sydney with the NSW Waratahs as a likely destination if he rejoins Super Rugby.

But the Brumbies could be keen to add another winger to their squad after Taliauli injured his anterior cruciate ligament.

If scans confirm Taliauli's injury, he will need a knee reconstruction and up to nine months to recover.

Mitchell has played for the Queensland Reds, Western Force and Waratahs, but most squads have full rosters less than a month before the start of the Super Rugby campaign.

Nigel Ah Wong will return to Canberra this week after a stint with Japanese club Suntory while Anthony Faingaa will join the Brumbies next week.

"Gits would obviously be a playmaking leader but is good off the field as well," Larkham said.

"We've got Nigel Ah Wong and Anthony coming back too ... what we've said so far is that we're not putting anyone on [a pedestal], we're all trying to communicate well on the same level.

"The motivation is really high and the energy is really high and I think it's because everyone's pushing each other."
