Interim Brumbies boss Phil Thomson has started meeting with key stakeholders in the hope of mending relationships, including trying to rebuild a partnership with the University of Canberra.

A falling out between former Brumbies chief executive Michael Jones and departed university vice-chancellor Stephen Parker triggered a turbulent period for the Super Rugby club and strained relationships.

Thomson has met Canberra club presidents, sponsors, life members and government officials in his 18 days in the job since taking over from Jones after he accepted a payout to leave the Brumbies.

Thomson's discussions have included allowing the government to send in auditors to their base at the University of Canberra to examine finances and the club's stability.

The Brumbies finalised a new deal with the government earlier this year to increase their $1.2 million funding incrementally over the coming years.

"I've been in back-to-back meetings most days … the government came in [last week] and they're in to start the auditing process," Thomson said.

"It will probably take a month or so for them to finalise their report. It's an audit process, so they're looking at a number of things throughout the organisation from financials to contracts and all of those sorts of things.

"It's due diligence in business and my discussions with the government is that they do hand over a large amount of money to us that is taxpayers' money and they have to make sure they're doing their job.

"They have to do their work to make sure we're financially viable as an organisation and we are in a good position."

The ARU is still working with the government to host a Test between the Wallabies and Argentina in Canberra in September next year.

It comes as the Brumbies try to settle their back-room operations after the organisation was dragged through a legal stoush with Jones that resulted in a payout.

Thomson is in the chief executive role for at least the next three to six months as the board searches for a long-term successor.

Thomson has put on hold his role as the ARU's integrity unit manager while the board is working to engage a recruitment company to help with their search.

In the meantime, Thomson has been charged with easing tension in the Canberra rugby community and working to bring key stakeholders back to the club.

He has met University of Canberra officials, major sponsor Aquis and several other financial partners, who have indicated they are willing to stick with the club if the Brumbies get their operations organised.

There are some issues in relation to the Brumbies' Alliance Agreement with the university that are still being negotiated.

"There's still a long way to go, but I've very confident we'll be able to mend bridges," Thomson said.

"The feedback I'm getting is that some people aren't happy with the path the Brumbies have gone down the past 12 months or so.

"But they've indicated they'd be happy to come back and support the Brumbies if we can get things right in our own organisation.

"It's in regards to our relationships with people. The Brumbies is a strong brand in Canberra, for various reasons people have fallen off the supporter wagon.

"We need to listen to what their issues are and get them back on the wagon again."

The Brumbies are at the top of the Australian Super Rugby conference and are in the box seat to clinch a finals berth when the competition resumes in July.

Brumbies chairman Robert Kennedy is still working with coach Stephen Larkham to finalise his future beyond the end of the year, but negotiations are on hold while Larkham joins the Wallabies as an assistant for a three-Test series against England.
