The Brumbies have started advertising for a new chief executive almost four months after the board and Michael Jones agreed to part ways and as negotiations continue to keep coach Stephen Larkham.

Thomson stepped in to fill the void and has provided a calming influence in the capital during one of the most turbulent times in Brumbies history.

He has stood up as a respected and trusted figure to help players and staff after Christian Lealiifano was diagnosed with leukaemia two weeks ago.

It's understood some influential Brumbies figures are keen for Thomson to explore the option of extending his stay given he has helped stabilise the organisation.

But the former Australian Federal Police detective confirmed he would not apply for the full-time job and was set to return to his role as the ARU's integrity officer.

The Brumbies have already been approached by at least 12 potential candidates who have expressed interest in taking on the job.

"I was only here in an interim position and that's what I've said," Thomson said.

"So I'll let the board go through their process to find a new chief executive. I'm not applying for the position. I came in to try to help move the Brumbies forward and I'm confident it's set up for someone to come in and take the job into the future."

The Brumbies have finalised a selection committee, who will work with a recruiting company to review applications before conducting interviews and recommending a candidate to the board.

The selection committee will be a mix of independent officials as well as people from the rugby community.

Jones and the board were at loggerheads at the start of the year after back-room drama that led to a split in support.

The board stood down Jones in March following an interview on ABC Grandstand, but Jones took the club to the ACT Supreme Court the next day and won an injunction to stay in his position. He agreed to a payout almost two months later.

The Brumbies are also still working with coach Larkham to see if he will commit to a new deal in Canberra.

Larkham's Super Rugby contract has expired and the Brumbies are working with the former Wallaby and his agent to try to finalise a deal for the 2017 season.

The ARU wants Larkham to become a full-time Wallabies assistant coach to work with Test mentor Michael Cheika.

But it's likely that Larkham will agree to at least one more year in the capital, given the Brumbies would have limited time to find a new coach before the next Super Rugby season.

Brumbies chairman Robert Kennedy has taken charge of Larkham's negotiations and will also play a significant role in the chief executive search.

Applications for the job will close on September 5, with interviews to begin in October.

The Brumbies are set to report a financial loss at the end of the year despite Jones' projections that the club would turn a profit.

The Brumbies hosted a Super Rugby final against the Otago Highlanders, but wet and cold weather affected the size of the crowd and cost the club a sizeable profit.
