Cubelli and the wounded ACT Brumbies have spent extra time in the gym this week while the rest of the squad takes a break from rugby duties during the bye week.

The Argentina No. 9 has started running three months after damaging his petallar tendon in a pre-season trial match in February.

Cubelli has pushed aside contract negotiations to focus on making a comeback to bolster the Brumbies' hopes of making the finals.

He could be fit to play for Argentina in two Tests against England and one against Georgia in June.

But Cubelli says he won't rush his return to ensure he can make an impact for the Brumbies if he's needed as a late spark for a finals charge.

The Brumbies still lead the Australian conference despite losing their past three games in a row.

"It's not easy to be injured but I'm trying not to get crazy about it to focus on being able to get back and hopefully be ready to be an impact if the boys and team needs me," Cubelli said.

"The coaches and the physios will decide when I'm ready for both [the Brumbies and Argentina]. I just want to be back playing and be able to have an impact."

Cubelli is one of a host of Brumbies who will be off contract at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old had delayed any talks about his future until he completes his rehabilitation as he aims to be back on the field for the last regular-season games of Super Rugby.

The Brumbies have six games left in their season, including a two-game trip around the world to play against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth and the Argentina Jaguares in Cubelli's home town, Buenos Aires.

Cubelli will join the Brumbies in Argentina to show the players around his former rugby club and to touch base with the Pumas ahead of the international season.

"I'm really looking forward to it. First to catch up with family and friends and then to show the guys around [Buenos Aires]," Cubelli said.

"I've had a lot of time to think about my game and understand it, as well as working on different parts of the body.

"You've got to use your time off to grow and become better at things, and I'm lucky I get to still go back to Argentina."

The Brumbies are hoping they will get reinforcements for the closing stages of the season as Cubelli, Scott Sio and Kyle Godwin all race to be fit to play again.

It is hoped Godwin will recover from a broken hand in time to be a part of the squad to tour South Africa and Argentina while Cubelli and Sio are on track to play in the last two regular-season games.

Cubelli has been impressed with the rise of his starting XV replacement, Joe Powell, and the pair could go head to head in Canberra when the Wallabies play against Argentina on September 16.

Powell has emerged as a Wallabies scrumhalf contender in just his second Super Rugby season.

"I like to see Joe enjoying what he's doing because he's worked really hard and he deserves his chance," Cubelli said.

"I would like to play against him because I would like to see Joe make the Wallabies and play many minutes. Hopefully we can play against each other in Canberra - that would be special."
